How do you think you would perform in today’s football? Would be small and slow and not half the fun off the field so happy to have played in different era.

Any memorable moments? My First Game. Dunstall’s 17 goals against Richmond.

Name the Teammate in your time that was the most memorable and why?I was lucky to be at the club at the backend of some great teams, players and personalities. Peter Schwab stands alone as one that was able to perform both on and off field. “Ron Roarer” and “Old Hank” were personal and crowd favourites.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? Think I would be in trouble as I can’t think of a current player who I could compare myself with physically although I guess the training regime would help shed the kilos. I would love the interchange system though, you get tired & you come off, what a beauty.

Any memorable moments? Just playing football and making lifetime friends, both players & support staff.

Name the Teammate in your time that was the most memorable and why? Best is Leigh for obvious reasons (statistics), but the most amusing would have to be Don Scott, first person I heard say f…. in public & not offend anyone.

Any memorable moments? Being a member of the 1976 winning Premiership Team

Name the Teammate in your time that was the most memorable and why? Leigh Mathews – brilliant player who gave plenty and copped plenty but never whinged.

Funniest player you played with? Russell Greene played for 15 years and never once brought a towel to training. Always used someone else’s then folded the wet towel up neatly and placed it back in the unsuspecting player’s bag. Never got caught. Great with all the Nicknames. Rodney Eade was a classic – funny, and taught me how to get through a training session without being seen once by the coach. (Then I worked out he didn’t need to be seen as he was IN the team, but I wasn’t. So not a good strategy for me!)

Any memorable moments? As a reserves player in 1985 running out behind Leigh Matthews on to Glenferrie Oval to train Thursday before the Grand Final when the Seniors and Reserves were both in the Grand Final. At least 10,000 spectators at training that day on Show Day. An awesome feeling for an 18 year old.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? If picked forward of Cyril Rioli,I would go very well…otherwise if left to myself I would like to be a reliable team player.

Any memorable moments? In 1964 I played one game with Richmond FC ,I took one mark, had one kick, and got one goal! Otherwise, sport has been very kind to me and I have had a great deal of pleasure and met some wonderful people along the way.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? Hopefully I would adapt! Would have to improve my kicking. I don’t know about Football as a full – time profession for myself.

Any memorable moments? 1971 Premiership and Final Series. Best Team-Man Award in 1973 The whole Hawthorn Football Club experience is indelibly etched into my DNA.

Occupation Retired after sale of own superannuation/investment business 10 years ago. Sit on several business sporting and non-profit boards, Including the Victorian Institute of Sport and the Advisory Board of the AFLPA.

Hobbies Golf, jogging, grand parenting. Heavily involved with my old amature club, University Blacks, as past president. In the last 10 years I have been lucky to travel with some mates to some major sporting events (Lords cricket, US Masters, two Soccer World Cups).

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? I’d be OK for the stamina and ball handling skills required but speed of foot would see me floundering. I assume the kicking skills of the 1970’s would be brought up to current standard with full time training.

Any memorable moments? Obviously the 1971 premiership is the big one as to a “moment” a week hardly goes by without somebody mentioning my running into Carl Ditterich in the Grand Final. He hit the turf and I stayed upright. It‟s like one second of action defined my whole career.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? I think we would all go well, even more so because we would not have the Big Saturday Nights at the Social Club and even bigger pleasant Sunday mornings after training. „Gee we had some fun, didn‟t we Boys”?

Any memorable moments? My best memory and most cherished moment of my whole career was the final siren of the 1976 Grand Final and taking the cup back to Crimmo‟s. Money couldn‟t buy that.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? It is difficult to compare eras, given the same opportunities as present day players the 61 side would compare very favourably.

Any memorable moments? Obviously the 1961 Premiership and kicking the final goal in the second Semi Final against Melbourne which we won by 7 points.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? Having had a strong background in athletics, I think I would be ok with the running aspect nowadays. Today’s players seem more than happy to sit on the bench for a period of time but having done plenty of this I’m not sure I’d welcome that. I’d certainly need to sharpen up my inside skills, but I think not having to wrestle guys twice as heavy as I was, I’d welcome a go in today’s game.

Any memorable moments? From a playing perspective being a part of the 1989 Premiership team is the obvious highlight. Aside from that I’ve got many great memories of just being at the club. We had some magnificent footy trips, players review nights and the general socialising and these are what I look back on and enjoy reminiscing about. We had so many “big” characters and they all seemed to bring so much to any situation be it on field or off, so as a group we were never short of entertainment.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? Not sure, but would enjoy the challenge.

Any memorable moments? Just being around Mark Graham and Craig Trelevon’s swim/swam dive in Perth.

Current notes of interest As a youngster Kris played in a Premiership side with North Melbourne under 19s under Dennis Pagan in the last year of the competition alongside players like Corey McKernan and Glenn Archer and in three Premiership sides with Vermont before being picked up by Hawthorn as a mature age player.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? Provided the ball was delivered low to me (I was not a regular or reliable overhead mark), then I’m available for selection. It is a pleasure to see today’s players covering the ground as only we followers and centre line players had to do.

Any memorable moments? My first game for Hawthorn. From as far as Swinburne Tech the streets were full of people wearing Hawthorn and Essendon scarves and jumpers and on entering the Colosseum (Glenferrie Oval) I could see the members stand packed. There were telegrams of good wishes and even the umpire wished me well. I sought sanctuary in the changing rooms with friendly strangers. The rest became a bit of a blur. After the match we enjoyed drinks with our opponents, the umpires and officials from both clubs and by the end of the day the strangers had become very firm team-mates and I knew I had joined a very special club.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? Would probably go ok in the ruck contests but was a poor stats accumulator when I played, I would probably expect the stats wouldn‟t change considerably as the game is now so quick.

Any memorable moments? My first game, Grand Final victories in 86, 88, and 89, Dippers joke telling, Dr Bobs meetings, listening to tapes of waves breaking, Swabby‟s commercials and race calls and Kenny Goddard‟s wrestling skills on training nights.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? During my short career I started a lot of games on the bench as an impact player, so the rotation policy they use today would suit me beautifully.

Any memorable moments? My first game with the Hawks and the one that I get constantly reminded about is when I kicked a goal with a broken ankle against Sydney in 1995. Another one that stands out is the 1994 qualifying final against North when the scores were locked at full –time. It was the first time the AFL introduced extra time to determine a winner and, although we didn’t go onto win the game, it was an incredible experience to play in an AFL final.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? Impossible to know, in my opinion. As an Assistant Coach for eight years I saw how fast the game has become and how skilful today’s players have become. I guess height and endurance-wise I might’ve got a look in. Speed-wise I may have struggled. Whatever the outcome, it would be a great time to play, although a demanding life to live – but definitely worth the effort if I was good enough.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? Spoken as only Brendan could ‘I would fit in quite well, it would suit me. I would do it easy and rack up countless positions.’

Edwards was well known as a fitness fanatic and he is given much credit for establishing the circuit training that, for many years, gave Hawthorn the fitness edge on its rivals. The Hard Way describes how initially in 1957, as a physical education student at Melbourne University he was the sole team member doing circuit training outside normal team training sessions. John Kennedy and Graham Arthur were impressed with the results and joined Edwards in the training in 1958.

When the three of them had excellent seasons; coach, Jack Hale, made circuit work a part of the whole team’s training in 1959. In 1967-68, Edwards used his physical fitness expertise to design a commando training farm at Bulleen that was instrumental in the success of the Hawthorn teams of the 1970s. He has lived in Queensland for many years.

Current note of interest In November last year Ian was nominated and elected as Commodore of the Eildon Boat Club.

He celebrated this event with members of the club, close friends and a couple of fellow past players in Big Rob DiPierdomenico and John Kennedy Jnr at a sit down lunch at the Club boat house. Entertainment included music and dancing from Daryl Cotton and Lisa Edwards amongst others. Of course Ian provided his normal best on ground performance with a little table dance to set the trend for what will no doubt be a successful stint at the Clubs Helm. Good luck “Squirrel”.

How do you think you would perform in today’s football? Struggle – too slow.

Current notes of interest Eddie is currently sub–dividing the land where he resides with a planning permit to build a two storey house. The back half of the block will be sold to who Eddie describes as a “very smart investor looking for a blue chip addition to their portfolio.” Good luck with the project Eddie.
